CRDA Board of Directors Adopts Milestone District Master Plan to Guide Revitalization Efforts in Tourism District

CRDA Board of Directors Adopts Milestone District Master Plan to Guide Revitalization Efforts in Tourism District

(Atlantic City, NJ – February 1, 2012) – At its monthly board meeting held today, the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA) Board meeting adopted the Atlantic City Tourism District Master Plan, as a blueprint to revitalize the district and position Atlantic City for sustainable, long-term economic growth and job creation. The Atlantic City Tourism District Master Plan presents a strategic framework for the short and longer term initiatives, programs and projects critical to improving the local economy.

The creation and adoption of a Tourism District Master Plan was mandated in Senate Bill 11, landmark legislation signed into law by Governor Christie on February 1, 2011 to move forward with Governor Christie’s agenda to revitalize Atlantic City and set the region on a new course for economic growth, job creation and prosperity. The plan was developed in consultation with the consulting consortium of Jones, Lang LaSalle, The Jerde Partnership, Inc., Birdsall Services Group and Hill Wallack LLP.

CRDA Board Chairman James B. Kehoe noted, “This is a landmark day for Atlantic City and CRDA is excited to be at the helm of this redevelopment undertaking.”

A website launched in December, www.revitalizeAC.com, was designed to survey public and stakeholder perceptions and is being administered by international real estate firm Jones Lang LaSalle. The website has received an overwhelming response and will continue to collect data related to the Atlantic City Tourism District. A number of public meetings soliciting stakeholder input were held over the past few months in conjunction with community and civic meetings in Atlantic City and also received strong support.

“This plan creates an innovative model that integrates Atlantic City’s seaside location and world-class resorts, and introduces new concepts that stimulate pedestrian foot traffic throughout the district,” said CRDA Executive Director John F. Palmieri. “We look forward to bringing all the elements together to create a new visitor experience in Atlantic City.”

The Master Plan is designed to improve the city’s and tourism district’s amenities, creating a clean and safe environment and enhancing the visitor experience with a broad array of offerings throughout the approximately 1,700 acres that comprise the Atlantic City Tourism District.

It addresses short-term objectives to transform the Boardwalk, Pacific Avenue, Atlantic Avenue and several cross-streets into a lively, walkable destination with shopping, entertainment, dining and nightlife venues.  Mid-term objectives include the redevelopment of mid-town to incorporate concepts such as an artists’ district and entertainment complex, invigorating Gardner’s Basin to promote its existing characteristics and offerings as a tourist destination, and improving direct access from the Boardwalk to Gardner’s Basin, among other initiatives.

Long-term objectives include the creation of a mixed-use residential area at Bader Field while continuing to use the facility for music events and festivals in the interim.  Long-term plans also call for development of new gaming and non-gaming resorts in the Marina District along with a network of pedestrian and bicycle paths to connect the Marina District properties.

Minutes from today’s meeting and a .pdf of the Master Plan will be available on CRDA Web site, www.njcrda.com.

Just Let The ACA, The Atlantic City Alliance, Do Their Job?

This is my reaction to the story in the Press of Atlantic City  pertaining to Liza Cartmell and the Atlantic City Alliance.

The 30 million dollars that at one time funded horse racing and racing related activities in the state is now kept in Atlantic City to be used by the Atlantic City Alliance, the nonprofit organization funded by the Atlantic City casinos. The casinos kick in the 30 million dollars, they put together and make up the membership of this alliance and hired Ms Cartmell to to run it.

When AC had no competition people came, spent money and everyone was happy. Some depressed areas of the city were eliminated but most remained. We didn’t even have the Outlet Stores at the Walk and we were kickin A**.

But then it happened, how dare they Delaware “Got Gambling”. We were warned AC knew it was coming and from what I see nothing was done to keep Delaware slot players coming back.

Then it happened again PA “Got Gambling”, we were warned and there was nothing we could do to stop it. OUCH

Atlantic City has always been a Resort Destination “n” “A place frequented by people for relaxation or recreation: a ski resort.” We can talk about the incarnations of Atlantic City dating back to the 1800′s but won’t, this is about today!

Enter Governor Christie, he made some changes in the management of the city, appointed a new head of the CRDA the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority and things started to happen. Then the Atlantic City Alliance was started.

Everyone always has good intentions and ideas, but the town needed action. Liza Cartmell was brought in to head the Atlantic City Alliance and to oversea the 30 million dollars. Ms Cartmell held a previous position at Aramark.

This is how I see it. Ms Cartmell is a facilitator, she will seek out and propose to the committee the right people and companies to re-brand and market Atlantic City to the nation and utilize the team at the CRDA to do the marketing locally, this is a huge job and all eyes are on her. We need someone with the right contacts and agencies across the country not just in South Jersey to get the job done.

I’m going to give you a name of a resort chain,  I’m sure you’ve heard of them and may even be able to picture something associated with them…Sandals Resorts. Who hasn’t heard of them?  If this group gets 1/2 the job done the Sandals marketing team has, everything will be just fine, and I believe they will!

As far as the alliance reporting everything they do and how and who will handle the publicity and Liza Cartmell having to report every move she makes and who she talks to…No!! We Have To Trust this team to do the right thing. Let them do their job, I know this is hard to do in Atlantic City but we have to trust them to get the job done.

Why can’t we be content to let someone do their job? Maybe past results in Atlantic City, past promises not kept some from candidates running for office or casino projects talked about that never happened, or the B.B. gun I wanted as a kid but never got, OK that’s another story. Trust!

Since Atlantic City is more than casinos, will that money be used to market and promote Atlantic City as a resort destination  that includes the Baltimore Grill, Ducktown Tavern, Irish Pub and the hundreds of privateers who are the real charm of Atlantic City. I’ve been involved in many discussions with my friends and colleagues in the media about this and I feel they will market the entire town as a destination just like Vegas, Branson or Aruba and the individual casinos will do their own marketing from their individual budgets.

One thing we can count on, our local newspaper and others throughout the state will be on her and this committee like a fly on ****  reporting everything they can get the scoop on, actually that’s their job.

I have all the faith in the world in this group, we should just sit back and not get an aneurysm over it, now go out and enjoy our town there is so much to do here now.

This Just In!! Both Superbowl Team Coaches will have their playbooks open for public inspection before the game, OK Maybe not!

If this were Animal House They’d be on Double Secret Probation

Good Weather, Holiday Spirit Translate to Busy December for Atlantic City

Key Business Indicators Show Heavier Traffic, Bump in Welcome Center Visits

(Atlantic City, NJ, January 10, 2012) – Mild weather and weekend holidays seemed to work in Atlantic City’s favor in December, according to some key statistics.

According to unaudited numbers provided by the South Jersey Transportation Authority (SJTA), 1,582,635 cars passed through the Atlantic City Expressway’s Pleasantville Plaza on their way to the destination in December 2011, an 8.9% increase over December 2010.  Scheduled air service passengers at ACY were also up from the same month last year by 1.75%, and overnight bus passengers had a significant up tick of 88.9%, driven by a 76.6% increase in the number of overnight buses arriving in December 2011 over last December.  SJTA notes that air service numbers will decline going forward, due to the loss of AirtTran service.

Those traffic increases also pushed an increase in visitors at the city’s Welcome Centers on the Boardwalk and Black Horse Pike.  The information counselors assisted nearly 7,000 people in December 2011, a 52% increase over December 2010. There was an overall 10% increase in Welcome Center visitors for the year.

Traffic on the city’s main tourism Web site, www.atlanticcitynj.com, continued to surge, with 200,701 unique visitors in December 2011, a 49% increase over December 2010.  Of those, 181,525 were new visitors to the site.  Additionally, 83% more people opted in to receive eNews from the Atlantic City Convention & Visitors Authority (ACCVA), which operates the site.

“Obviously, more new visitors are joining the ranks of Atlantic City’s valued repeat visitors,” said Jeff Vasser, president of the ACCVA.  “This trend should increase as Revel opens this spring and the Atlantic City Tourism District experiences changes and improvements guided by the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority’s Master Plan.”

Even during a traditionally sluggish month for conventions in Atlantic City, there were some bright spots.  Two more trade shows at the Atlantic City Convention Center in December 2011 over December 2010 brought 121,849 delegates, who spent an estimated $9.7 million, a 10% increase over December 2010.

Spectrum Gaming Group provides the following additional insight to factors impacting December’s business climate:

“On a year-over-year calendar day basis, December 2011 had one more “weekend” day (a Saturday, New Year’s Eve) versus December 2010. Overall, there were 26 public events held in December 2011, versus 25 comparable events in December 2010, an increase of 4.0 percent.

“According to the National Weather Service, the average temperature for December reported at Atlantic City was 43 degrees Fahrenheit. This was considerably warmer than normal and than December of prior year. Additionally, there was no material snowfall in the region in December 2011, while in 2010 a major snowstorm that hit the region on Sunday, December 26.

“Average gas prices in the region in December 2011 were 8.3 percent higher versus December 2010 ($3.40 vs. $3.14 per gallon), but declined modestly during the month, from the first week of the month through the last, and were down from November 2011 ($3.50).”

The figures quoted above and others are available in the monthly Tourism Barometer, available online at http://www.atlanticcitynj.com/about/stats.aspx.
